In 2016, I had the pleasure of exploring Kawah Ijen and Kawah Putih in cooperation with The Tourism Ministry of Indonesia. I was one of the invited Travel Blogger from the Philippines to visit and explore Indonesia for 2 weeks.
March 2023, I visited Indonesia for the 4th time, and I was able to visit Kawah Putih again and first time in Kawah Rengganis.

Kawah Ijen
Witnessing the majestic Blue Flames Our adventure begins with Kawah Ijen, a volcano located in East Java, Indonesia. Known for its mesmerizing blue flames, Kawah Ijen offers a hiking experience like no other.
The moderate hike to the crater typically takes between 2 to 3.5 hours, depending on your pace and trail conditions.
As I embarked on this journey, I was filled with a sense of anticipation and excitement, eager to witness the enigmatic phenomenon that awaited me at the summit.
Our hike started at 1:00 in the morning. The hike to Kawah Ijen is a blend of natural beauty and rugged terrain. Winding paths through lush forests, providing glimpses of the surrounding landscape as we ascended higher.
Along the way, there are small shops where you can buy bottled water and snacks. As we reached the rim of Kawah Ijen, the sight before us took our breath away.
Nestled within the crater lay a stunning turquoise lake, its calm waters contrasting against the rugged volcanic terrain. The highlight of this journey awaited us deep within the crater – the elusive blue flames.
Kawah Ijen Blue Flame
Caused by the combustion of sulfuric gases, the blue flames of Kawah Ijen cast an otherworldly glow against the darkness of the night.
As we descended into the crater, guided by experienced locals, the surreal spectacle unfolded before our eyes.
Dancing flames flickered and danced amidst the sulfuric fumes, painting the night sky with hues of blue and green. It was a sight that seemed straight out of a science fiction movie, yet here we were, witnessing nature’s magic in its purest form.
After soaking in the beauty of the blue flames, we made our way back to the base, our hearts and minds filled with memories that would last a lifetime.
Kawah Ijen had left an indelible mark on us, igniting a newfound appreciation for the wonders of the natural world.
Note: You need to wear N-95 mask when at the peak of Mt. Ijen and you need to use a gas mask if you want to go down the crater and see the Blue Flame.
Kawah Putih
A Tranquil Oasis of Turquoise Waters Continuing our journey, we set our sights on Kawah Putih, or the “White Crater,” located in the verdant hills of West Java. Unlike Kawah Ijen, Kawah Putih offers a more relaxed adventure, with minimal hiking involved.
As we made our way to the crater, we were greeted by stunning vistas of rolling hills and lush greenery, a welcome respite from the hustle and bustle of city life.
The water’s color was surreal, reminiscent of a tropical paradise hidden amidst the volcanic landscape. We couldn’t help but feel a sense of tranquility wash over us as we took in the serene beauty of this natural oasis.
Exploring the crater rim, we were treated to panoramic views of Kawah Putih and its surrounding scenery. From lush forests to volcanic peaks, the landscape stretched out before us in all its glory, a testament to the power and beauty of Mother Nature.
As we descended to the shores of the lake, we took a moment to dip our toes in its cool waters, relishing in the refreshing embrace of nature.
Whether lounging on the banks or capturing the perfect Instagram-worthy shot, Kawah Putih offered endless opportunities for relaxation and rejuvenation.
Kawah Rengganis
Discovering Hidden Gems Our final destination on this volcanic journey was Kawah Rengganis, a hidden gem nestled in the heart of Central Java.
With its easy access and minimal hiking requirements, Kawah Rengganis is the perfect destination for travelers seeking a more leisurely adventure.
As we arrived at Kawah Rengganis, we were struck by the beauty of its surroundings – lush greenery, bubbling hot springs, and vibrant wildflowers greeted us at every turn.
Unlike the other volcanoes we had visited, Kawah Rengganis offered a more intimate experience, allowing us to connect with nature on a deeper level.
Exploring the crater, we were captivated by the vibrant colors and unique geological formations that dotted the landscape. From steaming vents to bubbling mud pools, Kawah Rengganis was a treasure trove of natural wonders waiting to be discovered.
As we bid farewell to Kawah Rengganis and Indonesia’s volcanic wonders, we couldn’t help but feel grateful for the memories we had made and the experiences we had shared.
