SM Prime and DENR Enhance Manila Bay Cleanupwith High-Tech Catamaran Trash Boat
In a joint initiative to combat water pollution, SM Prime Holdings (SM Prime) and the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) have strengthened Manila Bay’s cleanup efforts with the donation of a state-of-the-art catamaran trash boat.

The vessel was officially handed over to DENR on January 31, equipped with essential navigation and safety gear, along with specialized cleaning tools. Operated by the DENR Metropolitan Environmental Office – South Zone, the 30-foot catamaran will boost the agency’s capability to tackle water pollution and protect the marine ecosystem.
Engineered for efficiency, the catamaran can collect and transport up to one ton of waste, enhancing Manila Bay’s restoration efforts.
DENR Secretary Maria Antonia Yulo-Loyzaga (center) accepted the symbolic key to the vessel from SM Prime, marking a significant step in their shared environmental advocacy. The donation reinforces DENR’s comprehensive approach to Manila Bay’s rehabilitation by streamlining waste removal and improving water quality. This partnership highlights the impact of public-private collaboration in addressing environmental challenges.
“This catamaran symbolizes our firm commitment to environmental sustainability and the power of collaboration in building a greener future,” said SM Supermalls Vice President Engr. Liza Silerio, underlining the shared vision between SM Prime and DENR. SM Prime’s initiative aligns with DENR’s ongoing projects, such as the Parañaque Adopt-a-River Program, demonstrating the vital role of collective efforts in achieving lasting environmental improvements.
Present at the handover ceremony were DENR Undersecretary Jonas Leones, DENR NCR Regional Executive Director Michael Drake Matias, DENR Assistant Secretary and Environmental Management Bureau Director Jacqueline Caancan, SM Supermalls Vice President Engr. Liza Silerio, DENR Secretary Maria Antonia Yulo-Loyzaga, and SM Prime Estate Management and Development Senior Assistant Vice President Orliber Paule. Their participation underscores DENR’s commitment to strategic partnerships in environmental preservation.
With this innovative catamaran, DENR continues to strengthen its mission to clean, protect, and sustain Manila Bay’s natural resources for future generations. The initiative sets a precedent for how the government and private sector can collaborate effectively to tackle urgent environmental concerns and promote a cleaner, healthier ecosystem.
