SM Expands Solar PV Adoption in Support of DOE’s Renewable Energy Goals

SM is strengthening its commitment to renewable energy by expanding its use of solar photovoltaic (PV) systems, aligning with the Department of Energy’s (DOE) sustainability targets. With 45 properties nationwide now equipped with solar PV panels, SM continues to lead the way in reducing carbon emissions, lowering energy costs, and promoting cleaner energy solutions.

Harnessing Solar Energy Across SM Malls

As of February 2025, SM is close to full-scale operations of its solar PV systems, with additional properties set for retrofitting. For instance, SM City Bataan operates 4,060 solar panels, generating up to 2,376,000 kW of clean energy, significantly reducing reliance on fossil fuels.

Industry Recognition for Sustainability Excellence

SM’s dedication to sustainability has earned recognition from prestigious institutions:

  • SM Mall of Asia won the Sustainable Energy Award for a Private Institution at the 2024 Energy Efficiency Excellence Awards, with its 2.7-megawatt (MW) solar PV system capable of powering 1,790 households annually.
  • SM City Butuan was honored at the ASEAN Energy Awards 2024 for its commitment to energy efficiency and conservation (EEC) innovations.

Supporting the DOE’s Renewable Energy Roadmap

SM is actively contributing to the DOE’s Renewable Energy Roadmap 2017-2040, which aims to increase the Philippines’ renewable energy capacity to at least 20,000 MW by 2040. Through its growing solar portfolio, SM is paving the way for a greener future while helping the country transition to sustainable energy sources.

Strengthening Public-Private Partnerships

SM collaborates with leading solar PV system providers under the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) Distributed Energy Resources program. These partnerships facilitate the seamless integration of renewable energy into mall operations while advancing national sustainability objectives.

“At SM, sustainability is a core commitment. Our expanding solar initiatives reflect our dedication to a greener Philippines, in collaboration with the DOE and our valued partners,” shared Engr. Liza Silerio, Vice President for SM Supermalls Corporate Compliance Group.

“Together, we are not just cutting costs—we are driving long-term environmental progress and contributing to the Philippines’ green transition,” added Glenn Tong, Director of Green Heat Corporation, one of SM’s solar PV providers.

A Model for Sustainable Development

SM’s renewable energy initiatives serve as a benchmark for public-private partnerships (PPPs), demonstrating how commercial establishments can contribute to national sustainability goals while fostering innovation, job creation, and environmental responsibility.

DOE Undersecretary Rowena Cristina Guevara also expressed support for private-sector collaborations, stating, “The DOE remains committed to institutionalizing sustainable energy strategies, and we greatly appreciate the strong public and private sector partnerships driving this initiative forward.”
